About Along Narrow Lines

I have always been drawn to narrow gauge railways.

Perhaps it is the slower pace, or the way these smaller railways seem to belong so naturally to the landscapes they pass through. They wind beside estuaries, disappear into forests, climb quietly into mountains, and connect small towns and villages that often feel untouched by the rush of modern travel. Whatever the reason, travelling on narrow gauge railways has always felt different to me. More reflective. More connected to the journey itself.

That feeling is what eventually led me to create Along Narrow Lines.

Narrow Gauge Steam Engine

This site is my personal exploration of Britain’s narrow gauge railways, scenic railway journeys, coastal routes, mountain lines, and heritage rail travel. Along the way, I hope to share travel journals, photographs, railway visits, observations, and the quieter moments that happen between destinations — the sort of details that are often missed when travel becomes hurried or overly planned.

Although I enjoy the history and engineering behind these railways, Along Narrow Lines is not intended to be a technical railway archive or enthusiast database. There are already many excellent resources dedicated to locomotive numbers, operational details, and railway preservation. My own interest lies more in the atmosphere surrounding these journeys: the landscapes beyond the carriage window, the sound of a steam train echoing through a valley, the character of old stations, and the nostalgia that certain railways seem to carry with them.

Much of the inspiration for this site grew from a planned railway journey across Wales that I hope to undertake soon. Travelling entirely by rail from Dorridge, the journey will follow the Cambrian Coast before exploring some of the most remarkable narrow gauge railways in Britain, including the Talyllyn Railway, Ffestiniog Railway, Welsh Highland Railway, and the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Part scenic holiday, part nostalgic return journey, and part railway pilgrimage, that adventure became the starting point for Along Narrow Lines itself.

Narrow Gauge Train and Passengers

One of the things I value most about narrow gauge railways is the way they encourage slower travel. Sitting beside a carriage window while a train curves gradually through mountains or along the coastline creates a very different experience from rushing between destinations. These journeys leave room for observation, reflection, and reconnecting with places in a quieter and more meaningful way.

If you enjoy heritage railways, scenic train journeys, coastal travel, mountain landscapes, railway history, or simply the slower pleasures of travelling by train, I hope you will find something here to enjoy.

Thank you for visiting Along Narrow Lines, and welcome aboard.
